The Casdorph’s bought their first GSP at a swap meet for $40 in 1975. Little did they know that he was going to change our lives? As that pup grew up, he developed into a magnificent animal. People would stop and ask about him says Phil. And that led them to a dog show in Pico Rivera where I met Heinz and Daisy Schapheer. They bought our first two registered GSP’s from Heinz and Daisy Schapheer. That second pup (Britanja) was the one that started them trialing. In 1984 Britta was ranked in the top ten Puppy/Derby dogs in the country and went on to be their first FC.
Along the way, Phil and Stevi became involved with the Riverside County GSPC (AKC), and when Leroy Green moved to northern California, Phil became President and Stevi was the Secretary/Treasurer of the Riverside Club. They held those positions for almost ten years.
Back in the mid 1980’s Phil began to attend the White Mountain Trials in Arizona which included the NGSPA Chukar Championships. In those days his NGSPA involvement was limited to helping as a Stake Manager.
He was elected as President of the Chukar Association in 1994, 1995 and 1996. When Joe Hanzel was elected as President of the Chukar in, 1997, Phil served as his Treasurer. Phil was also elected Treasurer of the Chukar again in 2008 and continues to serve in that capacity today.
Phil’s involvement in Region 12 has been limited to an occasional Stake Manager assignment and serving as Treasurer since 2008 The AKC registry will show that between Stevi and Phil, they have finished 8FC titles, 6 AFC titles, 5 CH titles, 8 obedience titles and just last year earned our first Dual Champion title.
In addition they have bred 7 FC’s and 3 CH’s
The NGSPA records will show that their dogs have recorded one RU All-Age Champion, three Amateur Champions and one Amateur Chukar Champion.
One of Phil’s lasting contributions to the breed/AKC was his involvement in the development of the insurance package which was accepted by the AKC and has grown into the AKC insurance package as we know it today. The second most lasting contribution was the development and funding of the John Merrell All Age Memorial Trophy. This magnificent trophy has been presented for the last 18 years to the Winners of the GSPCA National Championship.
Phil has always given back in any way he could including judging whether it be field trials or hunt tests. Over the years he has judged over 100 weekend pointing breed field trials and many Championships for all pointing breeds. Phil Casdorph has selflessly been involved in German Shorthaired Pointer field trials for thirty-five plus years. He has served clubs from the local to the National level for most of that time. As Field Trial Chairman or just a committee member he is always doing his best to make sure things run smoothly. He has served clubs in many capacities but his greatest impact comes as President. His preparation, control, and follow-up are what makes the results complete.
